Square Gallery will highlight National Hispanic Heritage Month in October by featuring Texas and international artists as they pay tribute to the historic and memorable Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, during the Third Annual Frida in Red Exhibition.  Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States. This exhibit comes to Goliad from Hinovations Gallery in McAllen, Texas, where the exhibit originated in September.

Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 and later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The exhibition opening part will be packed with original artwork, performances and community involvement.  It is a Free Event and the public is invited to attend.   The Frida in Red opening party will take place on Saturday, October 13 from 2pm – 6pm at Square Gallery, 123 S. Courthouse Square in Goliad.  The all-media exhibition focuses on the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and the Color Red.  Red is energizing.  It excites the emotions and motivates us to act.  Red matters.  Nationwide artists were invited to incorporate red to add textural content to their artwork and reference Frida symbolically, literally and in any way desired.  This year art is also represented internationally from Iran, Australia and Mexico.  Participating artists include:  Cassandra Acosta, Elke Allen, Amy Anders, Audrey Cisneros, Celerino Castillo, Monica Chang, Tima Christina, John Dicandia, Wendy Gilbert, Alfredo Gonzalez, Diana Gordon, Tammy Gulat, Chelsea Fedigan, Juliet Hernandez, Lupe Hernandez, Raquel Hinojosa, Jeannine Leal, Rene Lopez, Thelma Lugo, Jacqueline Martinez, Alireza Movahedi, Fulden Sara Wissinger, Cynthia Ramos, Gaby Rico, Jennifer Rose, Cassandra Swierenga and Clarissa Zarate.  Artwork on display ranges from paintings on wood and canvas in oils and acrylics, drawings on paper, ceramic sculpture and mix media collage.

The Luna Y Sol mariachis from Beeville will perform from 2:30pm-3:30pm.  At 4:00pm Racquel Hinojosa, artist and owner of Hinovations Gallery in McAllen Texas, will give a brief introduction of the exhibit and introduce performing artists.  “Moon Song for Transcending and Invoking the Shift for Healing” will be performed by Artist Chamana, Danielle Lopez, designed to bring in positive energy to the artists, poets, exhibition and performances.  Actor Wendy Lara will perform a monologue segment in Spanish from the theatre piece “Buscando a Frida” formerly directed by Lucia Macias’ Theatrical Company.  Lara’s monologue is titled “Pinceladas de Tu Amor”. It is a very strong and passionate piece.  This is Lara’s third time to perform in Goliad and is not to be missed.
